Renegade Picture Show

As the pandemic has raged movie theaters have closed and filmmakers have had to find new ways to get their movies to market. At the same time moviegoers are open to new means of watching movies. Watching a movie online is great and all but it doesn't always match the level of escapism and the experience of going to movie.  Here, drive-ins have stepped in to fill the void.  Many stories of have about recently about the resurgence of drive-ins. I am working on a complete history of the Renegade Picture Show.  This is a work in progress.  In the meantime, how about a savory treat?

It's been some time and I've decided to re-launch the Renegade Picture Show in all its glory this August with RPS #24. Not sure what will be shown at this time or which Saturday evening it's going to be just yet so stay tuned. I was updating the site today, clicking through the links on the links page and was pretty shocked to find that there are very few guerrilla drive-ins left in the US. I think this is a result of the pressures of the film industry's regulating body and licensing folks hard at work putting the hammer down - way to go Swank and Criterion. "It's stealing," they say. (Do I want to get into the collective argument of copyright fair-use, right now? Kind of, but I'll sidestep for now.) In any case, the popularity of outdoor movie showings has skyrocketed. Here in the OKC metro it seems like everyone has some sort of movie night. On the river, at the botanical gardens, at the waterpark, at the amusement park, at the community park.....

Saturday, October 19th at 7pm will be show the Reel Rock 8 at Rocktown and presented by Backwoods. The tickets are $10 and may be purchased either online at backwoods.com or the day of the show.

It's getting to be that time again - Spring is on it's way (we hope) and with it will come another season of the Renegade Picture Show. As you know, we launched a new screen/venue last year and we hope to have even more shows this year. I am working on the schedule but already have a couple of film things planned. So stay tuned....

Greeting fellow Renegade Picture Show movie-goers! Saturday, June 30th, 2012 is a special day in many ways. It is the first show this season - and our 21st show over the course of 6 years running. We'll be celebrating the day and enjoying an evening of film in our BRAND NEW VENUE and on a much, much larger and even more awesome screen. The new screen is located on the opposite end of the same building where the old screen was painted. This is the third generation of painted movie screens and each one just gets bigger and better. This one all but knocks it out of the park. Coupled with an incredible grassy sitting area, this should be quite an enjoyable spot to watch a film. Someone already pointed out the imperfections of the building and how it's not entirely flat - my response is that it only adds character and is part of this style of movie-going experience where we have to make do with what surface we have to project on. Today is the anniversary for the frist drive-in movie theater which opened in New Jersey in 1933. There's a good article about the rise and fall of drive-in theaters and the uprising of "guerialla" drive-ins posted here !

Welcome back the Renegade Picture Show! We are working on several things to launch the new season. Right now we are in the process of creating a new screen. Our previous venue has changed since the relocation of I-40 so operations will now be moved to the north side of the building. The new screen will be larger than the old screen and super cool looking. With the change in venue there will also be a projection platform, a lawn (with actual grass), and an entire new feel to the space. We're looking forward to opening the season so stay tuned for the launch day. Oh - I almost forgot - we have some new promo stuff like the woodblock stamp you see here (provided by etch pop). We'll be stamping some stuff, making some postcard announcements, etc. We've also got a few stickers to share for those die-hard fans out there.

Just a quick update to let everyone know about the 2012 Renegade Picture Show season. We're working on a schedule of events right now and should be up and running this Spring! We can't wait to get back to it.

Last Saturday we hosted the 2011 Reel Rock Film Tour as our 20th Renegade Picture Show. Backwoods sponsored the event - which was really cool of them. It was held at Rocktown on the back of the building where there is a large white screen painted - same place that many other RPSs have been shown. In addition to the film there was a band before the show. This gave me the opportunity to have to build a stage. The band, Sanburke (I think they were called) did a great job. We had a sizable turnout for the show - not sure how many people but I would estimate it was on the order of 60-75. The weather was beautiful, the films were stellar, and overall it appeared that audience really enjoyed the experience. As far as the technical stuff, the sound was superb, the projector (the same one I've used for 5 years running) continues to beam big and bright without a hiccup, and the playing of the show was smooth. It's July here in Oklahoma and we are already in the midst of a major heatwave with no sign of relief. With highs in the low hundreds and nighttime lows sill in the 80s, it's difficult to get psyched about sitting outside in the sweltering heat at 10 pm and enjoying anything. I say this only because I'm a little frustrated we missed the very small window of "mild" weather in March that would have been the beginning of this 2011 RPS season. And now here we are, in summer. I would liked to have said that we've already hosted four or five shows in this, our fifth season for the Renegade Picture Show, but its not so. At this point the best we can hope for is a slight cool-down that will allow us to host a major showing. The one good thing is that we still have plenty of time. And summer can't last forever - can it?

Our Super 8 film night last Saturday evening was great. We watched a total of 17 short films ranging in length from about 2 minutes to 20 minutes. The program was divided into two half with the first half consisting of a number of Super 8 films I've found online. After a brief intermission we screened the second half of the program which featured shorts from the 2010 Cambridge International Super 8 Film Festival. Overall the response was good and I think people really enjoyed most (if not all) of the films. The next show - our 20th - will have to be a good one. I'm thinking about what to do. Ideas?

Renegade Picture Show & Aaron W. Gibson present an evening of Super 8 Film Shorts at Rocktown Climbing Gym this coming Saturday. The films vary from far and wide - several were selected as "Best of Fest" from the 2010 Super 8 Festival in Cambridge, England. The films vary widely in terms of genre; foreign, quirky, dark, sentimental, experimental...some arre just plain strange. Some are black and white, some color - appearance and... mood all differ. They all have on thing in common - all were shot in the Super 8 film format. This is a RARE opportunity to see the state of Super 8 filmmaking today and experience stories told across the globe in a variety of ways. Our first show of 2010 kicks off on Saturday, June 26 at 9 pm. We'll start the evening with Aaron Gibson's film, The Good Soldier . Shot on location at Rocktown Climbing Gym and in Norman, OK, this film has been recognized at festivals both internationally (Cambridge Super 8 Film Fest, England) and locally (deadCenter Film Fest, OKC). In attendance will be various cast and crew. The film will be followed by a short Q&A session. Copies of the film will be available for sale at the showing for $10 ( also available online ). Following a brief intermission we'll then show a classic FEATURE film (~95 min) of a similar genre. We had a great turn-out for this event. This was our first gig that we required tickets for. That's because the film cost us money to show so we needed to charge at least to break even. In order to do so I devised a plan to have vendor booths/sponsors for the event. At one time it appeared we would have 5 vendors but it eventually backed to 3 vendors. All were paying to be at the show and display their wares. As the crowd was mostly climbers, it was after all, a climbing film festival, they were drawn to the outdoor gear-store sponsor, and the wine vendor, the most. Our t-shirt vendor did ok but I think they wished that they would have sold more shirts. In any case, the event went wonderfully - not a single technical issue. In fact, it was probably one of the smoothest running shows I've delivered. As for the climbing films - all were absolutely amazing and with the feedback I got, everyone was really happy they attended. So maybe we'll make it an annual event. **** On to s...

Hey, if you didn't hear yet, Renegade Picture Show has teamed up with Rocktown Climbing Gym to bring the Reel Rock Film Tour to Oklahoma City on Thursday, October 1 at 7 pm. Vendors/sponsors at the show include: Tree & Leaf Clothing, Forward Foods, Backwoods, and Native Roots Winery. This is an outdoor show (of course) so bring chairs, blankets, etc. There is a cost for this exclusive show - ticket are $10 and can be purchased day of the show. Things have been slow this season for the Renegade Picture Show but that doesn't mean that we're done. On the contrary, we have plans for more shows and are working on some new ideas. It's just been a matter of finding the time to do the next show. The "Projectionist" (i.e. Me) has been working on his own film in addition to everything else that life brings. Who knows, maybe the film *might* even make the Guerilla Drive-In circuit one day. So don't lose hope...we'll be back soon enough. In the meantime, I wanted to share some news with you about a recent drive-in start-up in the Northeast. So the third season of Renegade Picture show has begun - this time with a "Dumb" (if not Dumber) movie. We had a GREAT turnout for the show and everyone had a great time. The weather was perfect - a great way to start the season. Sometimes I feel a little bad about turning down the music and starting the show because it interrupts the social atmosphere - everyone is moving about, chatting it up and just enjoying hanging out together. But once the pre-show footage gets going everyone seems to remember - ah, yes we are here for this - and they get comfortable and start to watch. Aside from a couple of technical glitches (i.e. losing power halfway through the show and having my laptop DVD player freeze-up at the VERY end of the film - that killed me by the way) everything went pretty well. I've realized I'm sort of a perfectionist when it comes to syncing everything together and making it appear seamless. I guess I have an expectation for that performance aspect of the s...

The third season of Renegade Picture Show begins this Friday, April 24 at our favorite movie watching venue. For exclusive movie watching details and the viewing location you must register for " THE LIST ." We have lots of great movies planned for this year. This first one is a personal favorite - a comedy that can best be explained as "dumb." For those new to the show here's how it works: You show up. Bring stuff to eat, stuff to drink. Something to sit on (or in); a chair, a blanket, in your car. We'll roll some interesting clips and stuff we've put together and collected from various places. Then we'll play the feature. All this starts at dark - which is pretty much 9 pm. This show is free but we happily and graciously accept donations. Hope to see you all there for this first show.
